Title: ‘Preserved Childhood’
Anna-Lucia Rijff, 2014
“Childhood is the kingdom where nobody dies”
Edna St. Vincent Millay, 1892 – 1950
Several preservation jars containing the stuffed animals from my youth. At first, funny. But after a few seconds it can become a bit bleak. One of the most important periods of your life captured in a jar. A moment for reflection?
Perspective – Childhood is innocence until we learn. The lessons you learn as a small child define your world: a complex but rigid framework about you, us and them, human behaviour, specific rules and values. Lots of ‘is’, ‘should’ and ‘must’. It constitutes a limited perspective, with boundaries that can be hard to see, and even harder to overcome.
